CNC Machine Holiday Shutdown & Maintenance Guide

Feb 06, 2026

As the Chinese New Year holiday approaches, Yangsen CNC would like to remind all customers to carry out proper CNC machine shutdown inspection and maintenance in advance.

Well-planned holiday maintenance helps ensure stable machine performance, longer service life, and smooth production restart after the holiday.

Why Holiday CNC Machine Maintenance Matters

During long shutdown periods, CNC machines may be affected by:

Moisture and corrosion.

Residual chips and cutting fluid.

Lubrication deterioration.

Electrical cabinet humidity.

Following the maintenance steps below will significantly reduce unexpected failures and ensure a trouble-free restart after the holiday.

Step 1: CNC System Data Backup

Before shutting down the machine:

Check the overall machine status.

Perform a full CNC system data backup, including parameters and programs.

This ensures fast recovery if any alarm or data issue occurs after a restart.

Step 2: Thorough Cleaning Before Shutdown

Clean all critical areas to prevent corrosion and contamination:

Remove chips and coolant from X / Y / Z axis covers.

Clean chips and oil residue from ballscrews and linear guideways.

Clean the tool magazine, tool holders, and grippers.

Clean the spindle taper to ensure proper tool clamping accuracy.

Step 3: Rust Prevention & Lubrication

Apply anti-rust oil to the worktable and axis covers

Lubricate:

Tool magazine transmission mechanisms.

Spindle unclamping mechanism shaft.

Spindle taper surface.

Proper lubrication protects key components during long idle periods.

Step 4: Power-Off & Machine Positioning

Before power-off:

Move the X and Y axes to the middle position.

Move the Z axis to the lowest position.

After shutdown:

Clean the electrical cabinet and ensure dry conditions.

Cover the machine with protective covers.

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent damage to electrical components and control boards.

Step 5: CNC Machine Startup Inspection After Holiday

Before resuming production, please check:

Machine cables and connectors for damage or corrosion.

Coolant system and lubrication system status.

Main power supply, air pressure, oil pressure, and voltage.

Restore backed-up data if alarms occur.

Spindle & Axis Warm-Up Procedure.

After long-term shutdown:

Run the spindle at 500 RPM for about 30 minutes.

Stop spindle and warm up X / Y / Z axes before machining.

24/7 Holiday Technical Support

Even during the holiday period, Yangsen CNC provides 24/7 online technical support to ensure fast response and smooth production restart.
